Volunteer mentors required by new social enterprise to help support refugees

Refugees & Mentors is a new social enterprise tackling unemployment by enabling refugees to improve their job prospects. Before being forced to flee their home country, many people were working or studying. However in Greater Manchester unemployment for refugees is high, at around 44%*, compared to 6%* across the general population.

To change this, efforts are focussed on two areas:
• Engaging organisations - across all sectors - to reduce unemployment for people who are refugees.
• Piloting a mentoring service for at least 20 refugees.

Refugees and Mentors are looking for people to join them as volunteer mentors. Mentors must have lots of UK work experience, live in Manchester, Salford or nearby and be able to commit five hours per month (this can be in the daytime, evening or weekend) for up to 12 months.

Mentors will provide direct help, such as practising English or interview skills, alongside enabling people to access other services and opportunities, building confidence and supporting them to take steps to increase their employment prospects.

How do volunteers benefit?
• Gain mentoring experience and skills working to recognised national quality standards
• Be part of a dynamic new organisation supporting refugees into work
• Gain an insight into refugee experiences in the UK
• Regular one-to-one and group supervision and support
• Induction and training

To apply or for more information email info@refmentors.org.uk or call 0774 708 0523.

Application deadline 12 January, 2017.
